Welcome to the STEMHAX Book Spotlight. Today, we explore Allegro: A Magical Journey Through 11 Magical Masterpieces written by David Miles. This book was original published as a musical push button book.

Overview

Allegro: A Magical Journey Through 11 Musical Masterpieces is a beautiful book for children, and adults, too. A little boy is frustrated with practicing playing the piano. As he is ready to quit, he begins a magical journey. This reading by Vooks, brings the illustrations to life. Allegro imagines himself in different scenarios, as the book is scored with 11 well known composers.

Exploring Allegro with Young Learners

First, start with a book cover inspection. Show children the cover of the book, and ask, “what do you think this book is about?” Follow this with some open ended questions to get their minds warmed up.

  • Where are some places we hear music?
  • What are some musical instruments you know?
  • How do you feel when you try to do something and it doesn’t work?
  • What is classical music?

After reading/watching the book for the first time, ask more open-ended questions. Remember there are no wrong answers. Some questions might include:

  • What is this book about?
  • What did the dots become in the story?
  • Where are some of the places Allegro went with his imagination?
  • Did you recognize any of the songs?
  • What was your favorite part of the book?
  • Why did Allegro get applause at the end of the story?

HINT: There are more questions and other lesson planning activities in the activity section of the Vooks website for Allegro: A Magical Journey Through 11 Musical Masterpieces.

Extend the Lesson

Here are some short videos of young children who practiced and learned how to play some of the songs from the book. Children love to watch videos of other children. After sharing these different instruments in these, or like videos, view a second reading of Allegro for more in-depth understanding through the sense of hearing.

“Fur Elise” by Ludwig van Beethoven

“Eine kleine Nachtmusik (Serenade No.13)” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
