Teaching Young Learners Coins
One of the most challenging math concepts to teach young learners is counting change. Over the years I have found some fun activities to explore with kids, it eases the stress they have when it doesn’t compute. Teaching Tips
There are some simple things that can help with teaching and earning coins, here are just a few tips:
- Teach skip counting by 5’s and 10’s read more about “Counting by 5’s” CLICK HERE!
- Introduce one coin at a time.
- Pennies (counting by ones)
- Nickels (counting by fives)
- Dimes (counting by tens)
- Quarters (counting by 25 to one dollar)
- Use real coins for practice
- Kids are more receptive to the responsibility of real money.
- Each school year, I add coins as part of the school supplies list, and send them home at the end of the year.
- They love the feel and the sound of coins.
- Be sure to have children wash their hands after using money.
- Repetition
- The more children repeat the better and faster they will be with counting money.
- Watching learning videos over and over is beneficial and fun for children.
- Once children are familiar with the coins set up a coin sorting center.
- Create your own with plastic plates, boxes or use these sorting sheets from our Pirate’s Treasure Coin Counting Packet.
- When starting to add us all the same coins
- Adding practice with only pennies
- Adding practice with only nickels
- Adding practice with pennies and nickels, and so on…

There are many books about money. Some you might even have at home or in the school classroom. Here are some online readings of a few books to help children understand about money.
If You Made a Million
This is a wonderful book and this video is an animated version of If You Made a Million from Scholastic Storybook Treasures.
The Coin Counting Book
The Coin Counting Book is the perfect book to introduce children to coins.
Benny’s Penny
Benny’s Penny is a simple book about what a boy can purchase with his five pennies.
A Dollar for Penny
A Dollar for Penny is a sweet book about a little girl collecting pennies for selling lemonade.
Curious George Saves His Pennies
In this book George saves his money to make a purchase from the toy store.

Coin Videos
There are many videos for learning and reinforcing coins. Here are some tried and true videos that kids love and adults can appreciate.
Coins
A quartet sings about coins in this fabulous video introducing coins. The song is catchy and kids will watch this almost everyday if you let them. The evidence is in over 8.6 million views!
Money Song
This money song is one of my favorites. It starts slow and builds up speed, so fun!
Money Song, Show Me the Money a Coin Song
Jack Hartmann has dedicated his life to helping kids learn with his catchy tunes. Young kids will appreciate the theatrics, too!
Coin Value Song
Mr. R’s teaching songs are great, too!
Nickelish
Songeez has a video for each of the coins: Pennies, Nickels, Dimes and Quarters. They have moved from YouTube to KindieTV.
Printable Resources
