20 FREE Resources Exploring “Sight Words”

Sight Words the First 40 Words

The two most common lists of words used in PreK-2nd grade class rooms are the Dolch Words and Fry Words. They are called many things such as sight words, high frequency words or instant words. These words are some of the most frequently used words in the English language. The earlier students learn these words the better readers they can become.

There are many resources available to assist educators and parents with a students particular learning style. Here is a collection of video’s, game ideas and FREE online printables. Most of these resources focus on the Dolch Pre-Primer Sight Words.

Videos

Some of the videos are for the teacher and some are for sharing with your students. The first video is called “Teaching the Dolch Sight Word…the Easy Way.” This is a good video for teachers and parents, as it gives a little background of who and why Dolch.

Next, is from Teach for Life, featuring Tyla Ast, and is a sample way of introducing sight words to a class or small group of students.

Here are some video ideas that can be incorporated into lessons when teaching about specific words or groups of sight words. There are many videos for sight words. The first one is from Miss Molly. She has over 180 videos for young learners. This video is for the word “the.”

This is one of many songs kids will enjoy from Have Fun with Teaching. This particular video is called “Pre-Primer Sight Word Song with Spelling.”

Sometimes kids will need a brain break. This is a great way to have students learn and get some blood moving at the same time. There are three steps to guiding the students with sight words; say the sight word, tap it out on the arm and clap the syllables and shout the word. Then between each of these words is a form of exercise for 10 seconds and on to the next word. This video includes the words being used in the FREEBIE from STEMHAX…CLICK HERE to download for free.

Some sight words don’t follow any phonics rules and can be tricky. This is a song form Epic Phonics called “Tricky Words and Sight Words Song.”

The final video is form one of my favorite kids learning video channels, Jack Hartmann Kids Music Channel.

Sight Words Game Ideas

The following are some game ideas that you can use with your students. These can be used with any sight word list.

Sight Word Cup Game

The Sight Word Cup Game is a fun game to play with students. The teacher in the video uses this to explain how parents can practice sight words for homework. Clever.

How to Learn Sight Words with Clothespins

This video is from the Purple Alphabet, and is an excellent center activity. Any sight word list can be used and adapted for this activity.

Sight Word Bean Bag Toss

The Bean Bag Toss is a wonderful way to get kids moving. Adapting this for young learners you might add an assist option. Where a student might not have mastered all his letters, yet wants to play. Simply ask the child to read the first letter on the card.

Oh, No!

Next is a game called “Oh, No!” Once kids learn how to play this fun game, it will be excellent for review of sight words.

I Have, Who Has?

“I Have, Who Has?” is a fun game. Your students will want to play this all the time at circle time. It is good for more than sight words, you can adapt it to anything your class is learning about or reviewing. When playing with very young learners, have them work in pairs or small groups. They can help each other with the words.

Sight Word Practice with Whiteboards

Mr. Thain Teaching Tips and Strategies shares a fun game for learning sight words. The kids need to find the sticker under the sight word. This is a fun way to get students to read and write their sight words.

Sight Words Memory Game

This is a classic game that can be played as a solo game or with small groups of students.

Sight Word Swat Game

The Sight Word Swat Game is fun and kids really love this game.

Sight Word Go Fish

Lastly, this video is an excellent instructional video for how to play “Sight Word Go Fish.” It is a little like regular Go Fish and just as fun!

There are so many other games that can be played with sight words, these are only a few to get you started.

Additional FREE Resources

The first freebie is from STEMHAX. This is a sample of the Dolch Pre Primer sight words; includes flash cards and some word work. It has an animal theme and the flash cards are grouped in pairs of eight and color coordinated.

Here is a free version of “I have, Who Has?” created by Smitten in the Mitten. This download includes all 40 the Dolch Pre Primer sight words. Thank you, Smitten in the Mitten this is awesome!!!

If you have students who are looking for and needing more, this is the perfect activity. Simply print on card stock and laminate. This is a pretty cool way for kids to practice critical thinking and coordination skills and learn sign language through the sight word study. Thank you, Mary this is great!!!

The last two freebies are related to Thanksgiving and are perfect for the month of November. I love them both and so will your students. The first is “Thanksgiving Write the Room” by Krisitn Kring. This can be used in the classroom or homeschool. Simply print, cut and hang around the room. Kids love to walk around with their clipboards to find the words. You rock, Kristen!
